A little celebrity drama was enough to shake up Instagram’s follower counts.
Kylie Jenner recently lost almost one million followers after sharing a single Instagram post — a drop that became a hot topic across social media.
To most people, that’s a jaw-dropping number. But for Jenner — who runs beauty, fashion, and beverage brands — it’s more of a small dent than a disaster. She still commands an enormous following of around 392 million people.
The reality star and entrepreneur, who turns 28 this Sunday (August 10), is one of the most-followed people on Instagram — surpassing even some of her famous sisters like Kim Kardashian.
While it’s doubtful Jenner lost much sleep over a fraction of her fanbase hitting the unfollow button, internet sleuths kept a close eye as her numbers dropped in real time.
The Drama Behind the Drop
The timing of the follower dip had many convinced it was linked to a fresh wave of celebrity gossip — with Jenner seemingly caught in the middle of a rumored feud between her close friend Hailey Bieber and singer-actress Selena Gomez.
Hailey has long been a bestie of the Jenner clan. For years, fans have speculated about tension between Bieber and Gomez — especially since Gomez famously dated Justin Bieber before Hailey married him.
This latest flare-up started when Gomez posted a lighthearted TikTok poking fun at herself for over-laminating her eyebrows.
Shortly after, some fans thought Jenner threw subtle shade by posting an Instagram Story that looked like more than just a coincidence.
Jenner shared a screenshot of a FaceTime call with Hailey Bieber, zoomed in on both of their eyebrows. To many, it felt like an indirect jab at Gomez’s earlier post. That was enough for critics to label Jenner and Bieber the “mean girls” of Instagram, sparking a wave of backlash.
Bye-Bye Followers
Supporters of Gomez quickly made their feelings known — by unfollowing Jenner.
Within days, reports suggested around 124,000 people had dropped her from their feeds.
By the following week, Social Blade data indicated her losses had grown to nearly 750,000 followers. Hailey Bieber’s account reportedly took an even bigger hit, losing about 922,000 followers during the same time.
Jenner and Gomez Respond
“This is reaching. No shade towards Selena ever and I didn’t see her eyebrow posts! You guys are making something out of nothing. This is silly.”
Selena Gomez also stepped in to clear the air, replying:
“Agreed @kyliejenner. It’s all unnecessary. I’m a fan of Kylie!”
In the end, both women denied any bad blood — but the internet drama still managed to make a dent in their follower counts.
