After years of silence and speculation, Prince William has finally spoken about his brother, Prince Harry — albeit briefly. The once inseparable brothers, whose bond was admired by millions around the world, have been estranged since Harry’s decision to step away from royal duties in 2020 alongside his wife, Meghan Markle.
The rift between the brothers reportedly began when Harry and Meghan departed the UK to begin a new life in the United States, effectively leaving behind their royal roles. Their exit, often referred to as “Megxit,” caused a major divide within the royal family, and the relationship between William and Harry, once extremely close, began to deteriorate rapidly.
Harry’s 2023 memoir Spare deepened the cracks. In the tell-all book, the Duke of Sussex made several shocking claims about his brother and sister-in-law, Kate Middleton. Among the most explosive revelations was Harry’s accusation that William physically confronted him during a 2019 dispute. The memoir also painted a picture of long-standing rivalry and resentment within the royal household.
Despite the public airing of grievances, Prince William maintained an unwavering silence. He neither responded to the claims nor made any public statements about his brother, choosing instead to focus on his royal duties and family. However, reports later surfaced suggesting that Harry regretted certain parts of his memoir — particularly those concerning his brother.
Royal expert Jennie Bond revealed that, despite the deep divide, there have been small gestures of civility. For instance, when Harry celebrated his birthday, a message was posted from the official social media accounts of Prince William and Kate Middleton. “I still think things are too sensitive for a meaningful reconciliation with William,” Bond told OK! magazine. “But the fact that he and Catherine authorised the greeting to be posted is definitely an unexpected turn of events.”
According to Bond, reconciliation between the brothers is not among William’s top priorities. “William has so much on his plate at the moment that I don’t think he has room in his heart or head to deal with all that has gone on with Harry,” she explained. “While the brothers may never be close again, or even live on the same continent, it doesn’t mean that the future has to be full of bitterness and bad blood. Catherine is right — family should always be paramount.”
For years, William has carefully avoided any mention of his younger brother in public. But that changed recently when he appeared on Apple TV+’s show The Reluctant Traveller. In a rare moment of openness, William reflected on his upbringing and made a brief reference to Harry.
“I hope we don’t go back to some of the practices in the past that Harry and I had to grow up in,” the Prince of Wales said. “And I’ll do everything I can to make sure we don’t regress in that situation.”
While William’s comment was short and measured, it marks the first time he has acknowledged his brother publicly since their fallout. Royal watchers quickly noticed the mention, prompting speculation about whether it signaled a thaw in the brothers’ frosty relationship.
However, Jennie Bond cautioned against reading too much into the remark. Speaking to The Mirror, she said, “The mention of Harry is indeed fleeting, and I think it would be wrong to spend much time talking about it. But I suppose it does show that William hasn’t blocked his brother completely from his brain. It was only natural for him to include Harry when talking about his childhood.”
Bond added that William’s appearance on The Reluctant Traveller offered a rare glimpse into the future king’s personality and mindset. “We all think we know him, at least as a prince,” she noted, “but this was a glimpse behind the mask at the man who will be King. The words that screamed out at me were his unequivocal intention to question whether certain aspects of the monarchy are fit for purpose.”
Whether this brief acknowledgment of Harry signals the start of healing remains uncertain. But for royal watchers, it was the first public sign in years that Prince William still holds space for his brother — even if reconciliation remains far from reality.
