Court Orders Former Owner of Katy Perry's Montecito Mansion to Pay Her $1.8M in Damages Over Lost Rental Income

 

Katy Perry has been granted $1.8 million in damages for lost rental income in her ongoing dispute over a Montecito, Calif., home that former owner Carl Westcott attempted to reclaim.

The 41-year-old “Hot N Cold” singer and her ex-fiancé Orlando Bloom purchased the $15 million property in August 2020. Shortly afterward, Westcott tried to cancel the sale, arguing he lacked mental capacity due to Huntington’s Disease, which he was diagnosed with in 2015.

Perry officially obtained ownership in May 2024 after years of legal back-and-forth with Westcott — founder of 1-800-Flowers — who also sued Perry’s business manager, Bernie Gudvi, in an effort to undo the sale. A judge later ruled there was no credible proof supporting Westcott’s claims, noting he appeared “lucid, coherent, engaged and rational.” 

Perry recently sought nearly $5 million in damages, saying she lost $3,525,000 in rental value during the dispute and needed $1,343,401.95 in “necessary repairs,” according to earlier court filings. On Tuesday, Nov. 25, Judge Joseph Lipner decided Perry is owed $1,842,142.84, according to court documents obtained .

This amount includes $2,795,000 for lost rental value between September 2020 and March 31, 2024, minus retained capital ($1,062,736) and Westcott’s lost interest ($149,703). The judge also capped repair costs at $259,581.84, the same figure Westcott had previously suggested.

The ruling notes that from the original $15 million sale, Gudvi paid Westcott $9 million and held the remaining $6 million. He can now subtract the $1.8 million from that balance. Gudvi must also prepare the judgment, with a hearing set for Dec. 30 should he wish to contest it.

Perry and Bloom bought the Montecito home for their family, including their 5-year-old daughter Daisy Dove. The 2.5-acre estate features eight bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, a three-bedroom ocean-view guesthouse, an infinity pool, jacuzzi, and outdoor fireplace. It’s unclear whether the couple moved in after gaining access in May 2024, though sources previously told PEOPLE they began renting it out in February.

The Grammy-nominated artist is  currently on her Lifetimes Tour and will perform at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai on Wednesday, Nov. 26.
